Report #54702
[research] LLM arbitrarily selects or incorrectly blends information when presented with conflicting retrieved documents \(e.g., different API versions\)
Instruct the model to explicitly identify contradictions in the context and state the conflict, rather than forcing a synthesis. Use metadata \(date, authority\) to resolve conflicts if possible.
Journey Context:
RAG systems often return multiple documents with overlapping or contradictory facts. LLMs are trained to synthesize, leading them to merge contradictory facts into 'hallucinated hybrids' \(e.g., mixing parameters from v1 and v2 of an API\). Instructing the model to acknowledge ambiguity or strictly prioritize based on metadata prevents false synthesis.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
