Report #54605

[counterintuitive] Prefixing prompts with 'Act as a senior engineer' or 'You are an expert in X' to improve output quality

Specify the exact constraints, style, and domain knowledge required. Provide the context an expert would use \(e.g., 'Follow OWASP guidelines,' 'Target AWS Lambda runtime'\) instead of relying on persona labels.

Journey Context:
Role-playing prompts were thought to prime the model's weight space into a specific domain. In reality, modern RLHF-trained models often ignore these persona prefixes or produce stereotyped, cliché outputs. The model's capabilities are fixed; calling it an expert doesn't grant it new knowledge or capabilities. What actually shifts the output distribution is providing the specific rubrics, standards, or context an expert would rely on, anchoring the generation in concrete facts rather than a persona.
