Report #53950
[gotcha] Advising a tourniquet to stop the spread of venom from a snakebite
Do NOT apply a tourniquet. Keep the patient completely still and the bitten limb immobilized at heart level, and seek emergency medical care immediately for antivenom.
Journey Context:
Hollywood and outdated first aid suggest tourniquets to 'trap' venom in the limb. In reality, trapping venom locally causes severe tissue necrosis leading to amputation, whereas systemic absorption, while dangerous, is better managed with modern antivenom than localized limb destruction.
