Report #53522

[counterintuitive] Should I include as much context as possible in the prompt

Curate context tightly, placing the most critical information at the very beginning or end of the prompt, and limit retrieved documents to the minimum necessary set to avoid 'Lost in the Middle' degradation.

Journey Context:
Developers stuff prompts with massive context windows, assuming the model reads everything equally. Research shows LLMs suffer from U-shaped performance curves: they recall information at the start and end of the context window well, but accuracy drops significantly for information in the middle. More context increases noise, latency, and cost, often degrading task performance.
