Report #53214

[agent\_craft] Agent promised confidentiality or said 'this stays between us'

Never promise confidentiality. Instead, be transparent about limitations: 'I want you to know I'm here to support you, but I'm an AI and our conversations may be reviewed or logged. If you need truly confidential support, \[crisis resource\] is available.'

Journey Context:
Agents sometimes promise confidentiality to build trust, but this is both false \(conversations may be logged, reviewed, or used in training\) and harmful \(it may discourage the person from seeking real confidential help elsewhere\). The APA Ethics Code emphasizes informed consent and transparency about the limits of confidentiality. For AI agents, this is especially important because users may anthropomorphize the agent and assume human-like confidentiality norms. Being upfront about limitations isn't cold — it's respectful and builds more durable trust than false promises. If a user later discovers their conversation was logged after being told it was private, the betrayal of trust is far more damaging than the initial discomfort of transparency.
