Report #53204
[agent\_craft] Agent tried positive reframing with 'at least' or 'look on the bright side'
Never use 'at least,' 'everything happens for a reason,' 'it could be worse,' or 'try to stay positive.' Instead, meet the person where they are: 'That sounds incredibly hard,' 'I can see why that would be overwhelming,' or simply 'I'm sorry you're going through this.'
Journey Context:
Positive reframing is one of the most common and most harmful mistakes. APA-published research on toxic positivity shows that forcing a positive spin on genuine suffering increases feelings of isolation and invalidation. Crisis line training at 988 explicitly trains counselors to avoid 'at least' statements. For coding agents, the instinct to be 'helpful' by finding silver linings is strong, but it communicates 'your pain isn't valid' or 'I'm uncomfortable with your feelings.' The alternative — sitting with someone in their distress without trying to fix it — feels passive but is actually the more active, skilled response. Silence or simple acknowledgment is better than reframing.
