[counterintuitive] Using 'Let's think step by step' as a magic bullet for reasoning
Rely on native reasoning models \(o1/o3\) or structured reasoning tags, avoiding forced verbose CoT unless specifically debugging a logic error.

'Let's think step by step' was a breakthrough for GPT-3, but modern base models already reason implicitly. Forcing them to write out 'Step 1...' often leads to bloated, hallucinated justifications that waste tokens and latency. With specialized reasoning models, explicitly asking for step-by-step can actually disrupt their native internal CoT flow. Use structured tags \(e.g., \) if you need to isolate reasoning, or just let modern models plan directly.
