Report #52466
[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering just a temporary hack until models improve
Treat prompt engineering as a core software engineering discipline \(like API design\); invest in version control, evaluation, and systematic iteration for prompts.
Journey Context:
Many developers believe that as models get smarter, we won't need to carefully craft prompts. However, software interfaces require precise specification. Prompting is the programming interface for LLMs. As models become more capable, the complexity of the tasks we assign them increases \(e.g., agentic workflows, tool use definitions\), requiring even more precise instruction. The syntax might change, but the need to specify intent unambiguously is permanent.
