Report #52281
[gotcha] Instructing a heatstroke victim to drink lots of water
For suspected heatstroke \(hot, dry skin, confusion, loss of consciousness\), call emergency services immediately. Do NOT give fluids; focus on rapid external cooling.
Journey Context:
For heat exhaustion \(sweating, coherent\), oral rehydration is correct. Agents often conflate heat exhaustion and heatstroke. In heatstroke, thermoregulation and consciousness are impaired; giving fluids risks aspiration pneumonia or choking. The gotcha is that the intuitive fix for heat \(water\) is actively lethal in the severe form of the condition.
