Treat prompt engineering as a rigorous discipline of software specification; iterate on prompts like code, using version control and evals.

Many developers believe that as models get smarter, prompt engineering will vanish. However, even the smartest models need precise specifications of \*what\* to do, \*how\* to format it, and \*what\* to avoid. Just as high-level languages didn't eliminate the need for software engineering, smarter models don't eliminate the need for precise task specification. Prompting is programming in natural language.
