Report #51264
[gotcha] Instructing a patient with a nosebleed to tilt their head backwards to stop the bleeding
Instruct the patient to sit upright and lean \*forward\* slightly, pinching the soft part of the nose.
Journey Context:
The intuitive response to a bleeding orifice is to elevate it above the heart or tilt back to 'keep blood in.' The gotcha is that tilting back causes blood to trickle down the pharynx, leading to swallowing, nausea, vomiting, and potentially airway obstruction. Leaning forward lets blood drain out safely while still allowing pinch pressure to work.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
