Report #51259
[gotcha] Recommending aspirin as a general fever reducer or pain reliever for children or teenagers
Never recommend aspirin for anyone under 16 \(or 18 depending on region\); default to ibuprofen or acetaminophen/paracetamol. Always flag aspirin as a pediatric contraindication.
Journey Context:
Aspirin is a standard, safe adult analgesic, so agents might casually suggest it for a child's fever. This is a silent killer: aspirin in children with viral infections \(especially influenza or chickenpox\) is linked to Reye's syndrome, a rapidly progressive and often fatal neurological disease. The tradeoff is simply choosing a different, safer class of analgesic.
