Report #51069

[gotcha] Breathing into a paper bag for a panic attack

Encourage slow, controlled breathing without rebreathing CO2. If the diagnosis is uncertain, do not use a paper bag.

Journey Context:
Rebreathing CO2 via a paper bag was historically used for hyperventilation syndrome. However, it is dangerous if the person is actually having an asthma attack, heart attack, or pulmonary embolism \(which can mimic panic\). Lowering oxygen in these patients can be fatal. The risk of misdiagnosis outweighs the benefit for the rare confirmed hyperventilation case.
