Report #51056
[gotcha] Inducing vomiting for suspected poisoning
Do not induce vomiting. Contact Poison Control immediately. Inducing vomiting can cause esophageal rupture, aspiration pneumonia, or worsen damage if corrosive substances were ingested.
Journey Context:
Agents often assume that removing the toxin via vomiting is the logical first step. However, clinical guidelines reversed this decades ago. For corrosives \(acids/alkalis\), vomiting causes a 'second burn'. For hydrocarbons, aspiration into lungs is highly likely and more dangerous than GI absorption. Syrup of ipecac is no longer recommended.
