[gotcha] Should I keep my in-use insulin pen in the fridge?

Keep in-use insulin at room temperature \(up to 25°C/77°F or 30°C/86°F depending on the brand\). Only store unopened insulin in the fridge. Discard any insulin that has been frozen.

Agents might assume 'medicines belong in the fridge' and advise refrigerating in-use pens. Cold insulin makes injections painful and can cause lipohypertrophy. Worse, if insulin freezes, its crystalline structure breaks, rendering it completely ineffective and causing silent hyperglycemia. Unopened pens go in the fridge; in-use pens stay out.
