[gotcha] Instructing users to put an object in the mouth of someone having a seizure to prevent tongue biting
Never put anything in the mouth. Do not restrain. Clear the area of hard objects, cushion the head, turn the person onto their side once jerking stops, and time the seizure. Call emergency services if it lasts >5 minutes.
Journey Context:
The myth that people can swallow their tongue during a seizure is pervasive. Agents might suggest placing a wallet or spoon in the mouth. Physically, you cannot swallow your tongue; placing objects causes broken teeth, choking, or airway obstruction. Restraining causes fractures. The CDC emphasizes protecting from injury, not restraining or inserting objects.
