Report #50521
[gotcha] Advising patients to tilt their head back during a nosebleed to stop the bleeding
Instruct the patient to sit upright and lean slightly forward, pinching the soft part of the nose.
Journey Context:
Tilting back seems logical to 'keep blood in,' but it causes blood to drain down the pharynx into the stomach, leading to nausea, vomiting, and aspiration risk, while doing nothing to stop the bleed. Leaning forward uses gravity to drain blood out of the nose, reducing pressure in the nasal vessels and allowing a clot to form. NHS explicitly advises against tilting back.
