[counterintuitive] Using 'Let's think step by step' as a universal reasoning enhancer

'Let's think step by step' was a breakthrough in 2022 for zero-shot CoT, but modern instruction-tuned models recognize it as a cliché and often produce shallow, performative reasoning. Worse, it forces reasoning into the output stream, wasting tokens and exposing potentially contradictory logic that degrades subsequent instruction following.
