Report #49661

[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as a senior engineer' or persona adoption to improve code quality

Specify concrete constraints and context \(e.g., 'optimize for latency', 'use Rust idioms, avoid allocations'\) instead of assigning a persona.

Journey Context:
Persona prompting activated latent professional text distributions in early base/RLHF models. Modern models are already aligned to provide expert answers. 'Act as an expert' wastes tokens, increases verbosity, and paradoxically increases sycophancy—the model agrees with bad user premises because an 'expert assistant' should be polite. Constraints directly shape the output distribution without the sycophancy side effect.
