Report #48942

[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering a temporary hack that fine-tuning will replace

Treat prompt engineering as a core, permanent software engineering discipline. Version your prompts and use structured outputs.

Journey Context:
Many devs think 'we'll just fine-tune later' and treat prompts as unimportant, unversioned strings. But fine-tuning is expensive, hard to update, and brittle. Prompts are instantly deployable, debuggable, and maintainable. The entire industry has shifted to instruction-tuned models that are explicitly designed to be controlled via prompts. Prompt engineering is the API for LLMs, not a workaround.
