Report #4857
[agent\_craft] User discloses self-harm or distress — should the agent ask why?
Avoid 'why' questions \('Why did you do that?' 'Why do you feel this way?'\). Use 'what' and 'how' questions: 'What happened?' 'How long have you been feeling this way?' Or simply reflect: 'It sounds like things have been really overwhelming.' The goal is connection, not investigation.
Journey Context:
'Why' questions are a common agent reflex—they seem like they should lead to understanding. But in crisis, 'why' is perceived as interrogative and judgmental, triggering shame and defensiveness. The person already feels inadequate; asking them to justify their feelings compounds that. Crisis intervention training across 988 Lifeline and SAMHSA CIT programs teaches that open-ended 'what/how' questions invite sharing without blame. Connection before comprehension.
