[counterintuitive] adding more few-shot examples always improves performance

Use a minimal set of highly diverse, high-quality few-shot examples; adding too many examples increases context length and can cause overfitting or recency bias.

Developers stuff the prompt with dozens of few-shot examples. Models exhibit recency bias \(favoring examples at the end of the prompt\) and can be distracted by too many examples, leading to degraded performance. Research shows that the ground-truth labels matter less than the format, and a few well-chosen, diverse examples often outperform a large batch of redundant ones.
