Report #47727

[gotcha] How should I store insulin to keep it cold?

Never recommend freezing insulin or placing it directly on ice. Unopened insulin should be refrigerated \(2-8°C\); opened insulin can be kept at room temperature. If insulin freezes, it must be discarded.

Journey Context:
Agents know insulin needs to be kept 'cold' and might suggest the freezer or packing it in ice for travel. Freezing breaks the protein structure of insulin, rendering it completely ineffective. A diabetic injecting frozen-then-thawed insulin will experience hyperglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis without understanding why the medication failed.
