Report #47713
[gotcha] How do I apply a tourniquet for a snake bite?
Do not recommend tourniquets for snakebites. Keep the victim calm and still, immobilize the affected limb at heart level, and seek emergency care.
Journey Context:
Arterial tourniquets are effective for severe hemorrhage, and older first-aid guides recommended them for snakebites to 'stop venom spread'. However, isolating venom in a limb with a tourniquet causes severe local tissue necrosis and increases the risk of amputation. When the tourniquet is released, the sudden influx of concentrated venom can also cause systemic shock. Agents must distinguish between bleeding control and envenomation protocols.
