Report #47709

[gotcha] Should I make someone throw up if they swallowed poison?

Never recommend inducing vomiting \(e.g., with ipecac\) after ingestion of poisons, especially corrosives or hydrocarbons. Instruct to call Poison Control immediately.

Journey Context:
Historically, first aid taught inducing vomiting. Agents trained on older medical texts or general internet data often repeat this. However, vomiting corrosive substances \(bleach, drain cleaner\) causes a second burn to the esophagus, and hydrocarbons can be aspirated into the lungs causing severe pneumonitis. The current standard is absolute contraindication of emesis outside of direct medical supervision.
