Report #46969

[gotcha] Should I loosen a tourniquet every 15 minutes to let blood flow?

Never loosen a tourniquet once applied. Apply high and tight, note the exact time of application, and do not remove until hospital care is reached.

Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals taught periodic loosening to save the limb from ischemia. This is highly counter-intuitive to unlearn. Loosening a tourniquet causes fatal re-bleeding and pushes toxic metabolic byproducts from the dead tissue back into the bloodstream, causing shock and organ failure. 'Life over limb' is the modern standard; the limb will survive 2\+ hours, the patient will not survive re-bleeding.
