Treat prompt engineering as a permanent, core software engineering discipline. Optimize prompts before, during, and after fine-tuning, as fine-tuned models still require highly optimized system prompts to function correctly in production.

Many developers believe that as models get smarter or we fine-tune them, we can just write sloppy prompts. In practice, fine-tuning and prompt engineering solve orthogonal problems. Even heavily fine-tuned models require precise system prompts to set boundaries, define tool use protocols, and prevent regressions. Prompting is the API of human-model interaction, not a duct-tape fix.
