Report #46894

[research] Generating plausible but fabricated URLs, DOIs, or ArXiv paper titles when asked for citations

Never generate URLs or citations from parametric memory. Use a search tool to find the exact URL, and strictly format citations only if the tool returned the URL in the current context.

Journey Context:
LLMs are excellent at mimicking the structure of academic citations and URLs, but their parametric memory lacks the exact mapping. They generate 'dangling' URLs that 404. This is the classic hallucination failure mode. Grounding via retrieval is the only proven mitigation.
