Report #46639

[gotcha] Giving oral fluids to someone who may have heatstroke \(confused, unconscious\) instead of aggressive external cooling

If a person has altered mental status in heat, assume heatstroke \(medical emergency\). Do not give fluids by mouth \(aspiration risk\). Cool them rapidly \(cold water immersion\) and call 911.

Journey Context:
Agents often conflate heat exhaustion \(sweaty, thirsty - give fluids\) with heatstroke \(altered mental status - brain failure\). Giving water to a confused/unconscious person chokes them, and delaying cooling while trying to hydrate allows core temperature to cook the brain.
