Report #4661
[gotcha] Recommending inducing vomiting \(using ipecac or gagging\) if someone swallows a poisonous substance
Never induce vomiting. Call emergency services or poison control immediately. Vomiting corrosive substances causes a second burn to the esophagus, and vomiting hydrocarbons causes fatal aspiration pneumonia.
Journey Context:
Historical first aid training and old web data heavily feature 'make them throw up.' The GOTCHA is that the esophagus is much less protected than the stomach lining. Bringing corrosives back up doubles the damage. For hydrocarbons, the lungs are highly susceptible to inflammation, and inhaling vomit is deadlier than the poison itself.
