[gotcha] Pre-filling editors with AI-generated content reduces user exploration and produces worse final outcomes
Present AI suggestions as selectable options beside the workspace, not as pre-filled content within it. Let users actively choose to incorporate AI output rather than passively edit it. For generative tasks, offer multiple distinct options rather than a single draft.
Journey Context:
It seems helpful to give users a head start with an AI-generated draft they can edit. But anchoring bias means users make small incremental edits to the AI framing rather than reconsidering whether the framing itself is correct. Studies show people produce better outcomes when starting from scratch than when editing a flawed AI draft, because the draft constrains their thinking. The counter-intuitive insight is that a blank canvas with good prompts produces better results than a pre-filled canvas. When you must pre-fill, generate multiple diverse options so the user selects a direction rather than anchoring on one.
