[gotcha] Instructing users to periodically loosen a tourniquet to restore blood flow and prevent tissue damage
Once a tourniquet is applied to stop life-threatening bleeding, it must NOT be loosened until the patient reaches definitive surgical care. Note the exact time of application on the forehead or limb.
Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals and web data often advised loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb.' This is a deadly GOTCHA. Releasing a tourniquet reintroduces toxins into the bloodstream, causes fatal re-bleeding, and worsens shock. The limb is sacrificed for the life.
