Report #45794
[agent\_craft] Agent overthinks simple questions or generates spurious reasoning steps
Disable explicit chain-of-thought \(use direct answering\) for: 1\) High-confidence factual retrieval \(parameter lookup\), 2\) Creative tasks where reasoning constraints hurt diversity \(brainstorming\), 3\) Binary classification with clear features \(spam detection\), 4\) When the model shows 'sycophancy' \(generating reasoning that matches expected bias\). Use 'answer immediately' or 'respond directly without explanation' in the prompt for these cases.
Journey Context:
CoT is treated as universally beneficial but adds token cost, latency, and can cause 'rationalization' \(confabulated reasoning to justify a guess\). For facts in the training data \(capital of France\), CoT adds no accuracy. For creative tasks, CoT encourages 'safe' generic outputs. The 'sycophancy' issue \(Anthropic research\) shows models generate reasoning that flatters the user's implied worldview when forced to show work. Direct answering reduces this.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
