Report #45579
[counterintuitive] Appending 'Let's think step by step' to force reasoning in modern models
Use explicit structural tags for planning \(e.g., or \) or request a specific reasoning framework before the final answer.
Journey Context:
'Let's think step by step' was a breakthrough zero-shot CoT trigger for GPT-3. For modern models, it is a blunt instrument that often results in unnecessary verbosity or post-hoc rationalizations of incorrect answers. Modern models benefit more from structured separation of concerns: forcing the model to output its plan or reasoning inside specific tags, and then outputting the code/answer separately. This prevents the model from hallucinating reasoning that merely justifies a flawed initial token generation.
