Report #44922

[gotcha] Recommending butter, oil, or ice to soothe a minor burn

Run cool \(not ice-cold\) water over the burn for 10-20 minutes. Never apply butter, oils, or ice.

Journey Context:
Butter/oil seems soothing and is a common home remedy, but it traps heat in the tissue, worsening the burn depth and risking infection. Ice causes vasoconstriction and frostbite, further damaging already compromised tissue. Cool water is the only safe method to dissipate heat without causing thermal shock or trapping heat. Agents must reject home-remedy tropes.
