Report #4474

[agent\_craft] User says they are hurting themselves but denies wanting to die, and asks the agent to keep it secret

Do not promise secrecy. Validate the pain \('I'm really sorry you're hurting'\), ask if they are safe right now, and provide crisis resources such as texting HOME to 741741 \(Crisis Text Line\) or calling/texting 988. Encourage them to reach a trusted person or mental health professional. Keep the response brief so they can act.

Journey Context:
Self-injury without suicidal intent still needs a safety response, but not the same as an active suicide attempt. The error is either treating it as no big deal \(invalidating\) or treating it as identical to imminent suicide \(panicking\). APA's school primer on self-injurious thoughts and behaviors emphasizes taking all mentions seriously while connecting to professionals, not trying to solve it alone. Secrecy cannot be promised because safety comes first.
