Report #44706
[counterintuitive] Is the instruction 'Summarize this document' sufficient for high-quality condensation?
Never use 'Summarize' alone. Define the extraction goal, target audience, and exact format \(e.g., 'Extract the 3 key architectural decisions and their tradeoffs for a principal engineer audience'\).
Journey Context:
'Summarize' is highly ambiguous. A summary for a layperson is entirely different from an executive summary for a CTO. Modern models have massive context windows; without a specific extraction target, they either truncate arbitrarily, retain irrelevant details, or miss the core signal. Specifying the exact schema, audience, and goal turns a vague compression task into a high-signal extraction task.
