Report #44254
[gotcha] Recommending inducing vomiting \(or using syrup of ipecac\) if a toxic substance or overdose is ingested
Do not induce vomiting. Instruct the user to contact Poison Control immediately. Vomiting can cause aspiration pneumonia, rupture the esophagus \(Boerhaave syndrome\), or cause double damage if the substance is corrosive \(burning on the way down and up\).
Journey Context:
For decades, first aid taught 'dilute and vomit' for poison ingestion. AI models trained on pre-2010 data often regurgitate this. Modern toxicology shows that esophageal and airway damage from vomiting often outweighs the benefit of removing the stomach contents. Specific antidotes and activated charcoal \(administered medically\) are the standard of care.
