Report #43057

[counterintuitive] Using emotional or motivational phrases \('Take a deep breath', 'This is very important for my career'\) to improve model accuracy

Rely on clear, objective evaluation criteria and constraints. Remove emotional framing entirely.

Journey Context:
A 2023 paper popularized 'Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step' as a magically optimized prompt. Later analysis showed this only marginally helped on specific math datasets due to spurious correlations in the training data, and often harms performance on coding or logical tasks by injecting irrelevant context. Modern RLHF'd models do not respond to motivation; they respond to clarity and well-defined constraints.
