[gotcha] AI-generated citations and URLs rendered with same visual authority as verified references

Never render AI-produced URLs, DOIs, or citation titles as clickable hyperlinks or styled references without backend verification. Display them as plain text with an 'unverified' badge or greyed styling. Only promote to a clickable link after a HEAD request confirms the URL resolves.

Journey Context:
LLMs confidently emit plausible but entirely fabricated references—real-sounding author names, correct-format DOIs, URLs that follow valid patterns but 404. Product UIs that render these as hyperlinks or formatted citations launder the AI's false confidence through the interface's visual authority. Users click dead links or cite phantom papers in real work. The Mata v. Avianca case is the canonical burn: a lawyer submitted fabricated case law generated by ChatGPT to a federal court. The fix is not to suppress references but to visually separate unverified AI output from confirmed data, the same way email clients mark external images.
