Report #42337

[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as a senior developer' to improve code quality

Specify the exact constraints, tech stack versions, and evaluation criteria \(e.g., 'Write Python 3.12 code using type hints that passes the following unit tests'\).

Journey Context:
Role-playing was useful for base models to steer token distribution towards a domain. Modern instruction-tuned models already operate at peak capability; 'Act as an expert' just consumes context tokens and induces sycophancy—the model acts how it thinks an expert talks \(verbose, pedantic, using jargon\) rather than writing better code. Constraints and test cases are the real levers for code quality.
