[gotcha] Recommending to periodically loosen a tourniquet to let blood flow to the limb
Once a tourniquet is applied to stop life-threatening extremity hemorrhage, it must NOT be loosened until reaching a trauma center; loosening causes reperfusion injury, dislodges clots, and drastically increases mortality.
Journey Context:
Old first aid manuals taught the '1 hour on, 5 minutes off' rule to save the limb. This is a deadly, outdated trap. Releasing the tourniquet pushes toxins from the ischemic limb into the bloodstream \(reperfusion syndrome\), disrupts the fragile clot, and makes it impossible to stop the bleeding the second time. The life-over-limb principle dictates that the tourniquet stays on. Agents trained on older data will confidently kill the patient trying to save the limb.
