Report #41442
[counterintuitive] Does 'Act as a senior developer' or 'You are an expert' improve code quality?
Remove persona prefixes and instead specify exact constraints, style guides, and evaluation rubrics.
Journey Context:
Persona prompts worked early on to activate latent capabilities in base/early instruct models. Modern RLHF'd models already operate at peak capability; 'act as an expert' just adds tokens and can paradoxically constrain the model to stereotypical \(but less functional\) outputs, or trigger overly verbose/explanatory tones. Constraints and rubrics are the real drivers of quality, not role-playing.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
