Report #41105
[counterintuitive] prompt engineering is a temporary hack
Treat prompt engineering as a core software engineering discipline; it remains the most efficient way to update behavior, leverage tool use, and maintain adaptability without the cost and rigidity of fine-tuning.
Journey Context:
Early in the LLM era, many assumed fine-tuning would replace prompt engineering as models matured. The opposite happened: as models gained tool use, agentic capabilities, and massive context windows, prompt engineering became more critical. Fine-tuning is rigid and expensive to update, whereas prompts can be iterated instantly, making them the primary control plane for modern AI agents. Dismissing it as a hack leads to over-engineered, rigid fine-tuning pipelines for problems that just need better prompt design.
