Report #4100
[gotcha] Advising the application of a tourniquet above a snakebite to prevent venom spread
Do not apply tourniquets. Keep the bitten area still and at or below the level of the heart, remove tight clothing/jewelry, and seek immediate emergency care.
Journey Context:
Hollywood and outdated first-aid logic suggest restricting blood flow to stop venom. In reality, tourniquets concentrate the venom in one limb compartment, causing severe tissue necrosis and eventual amputation. When the tourniquet is finally released, the massive localized venom bolus enters the systemic circulation at once, often causing catastrophic shock.
