Report #40385

[research] Prompting the model with 'You are an expert in X' increases the rate of hallucination

Use neutral persona prompts or strictly role-bound prompts \(e.g., 'You are a careful research assistant who only uses provided documents'\) and avoid open-ended expertise claims.

Journey Context:
Expert personas shift the model's sampling distribution towards rare, domain-specific jargon. While this increases stylistic fluency, it lowers the factual grounding threshold because the model prioritizes sounding authoritative over being accurate. Persona adoption trades off with factual accuracy.
