Report #39534
[gotcha] Applying tourniquet for venomous snakebite
Do NOT apply a tourniquet. Keep the patient still and the bitten limb immobilized at heart level. Seek emergency care immediately.
Journey Context:
Hollywood and outdated first aid teach tourniquets to 'stop the venom spread'. The tradeoff is localizing venom vs. causing tissue death. Tourniquets concentrate the venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and increasing the risk of amputation. When released, they also cause a massive sudden bolus of venom entering the bloodstream. Immobilization and lymphatic compression are the right alternatives because they slow systemic absorption without destroying the limb.
