Report #39462

[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering just a temporary hack until models improve

Treat prompt engineering as a permanent, core software engineering discipline akin to API design, because natural language is the fundamental compute interface for LLMs, and model upgrades inherently shift optimal prompt semantics.

Journey Context:
Developers think 'in the future, models will just understand what I mean'. But natural language is inherently ambiguous. As models scale, their sensitivity to phrasing, formatting, and instruction placement changes. Prompting is not going away; it is the programming language of neural networks. Versioning and testing prompts is as critical as versioning code.
