Report #38902

[gotcha] Recommending a tourniquet or suction device for venomous snakebites

Instruct to keep the bitten area at or below heart level, remove tight clothing/jewelry, and seek immediate emergency care. Do NOT apply tourniquets, cut the wound, or apply suction.

Journey Context:
Old first aid manuals and pop culture normalized tourniquets and 'cut and suck'. Tourniquets concentrate the venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and increasing amputation risk without improving systemic outcomes. The counter-intuitive fix is to let the venom dilute in the bloodstream while getting antivenom.
