Report #38780

[cost\_intel] When does Claude 3 Haiku match Sonnet on structured JSON extraction tasks

Use Haiku for schema-following extraction from clean, single-context text under 4k tokens; quality delta <5% vs Sonnet. Escalate to Sonnet for nested reasoning \(>2 levels\), multi-document synthesis, or when extraction requires implicit inference not in raw text.

Journey Context:
Teams often overpay for Sonnet on simple extraction. Haiku matches Sonnet on schema adherence for flat JSON from clean text, but fails on 'reading between the lines' or hierarchical structures. The cost delta is 10x \(Haiku ~$0.25/1M vs Sonnet ~$3/1M tokens\), so misprediction is expensive at scale. Quality signature of Haiku failure: hallucinated fields when source text is ambiguous or requires cross-sentence coreference.
